Brazilian instrumenteal music

Vinicius Correa is originally from Porto Alegre, Brasil. As a guitar player with a solid carreer as composer his arrangements are frequently asked by various artists. This year he was also nominated for the "Premio Açorianos de Musica" as best instrumentalist.
Since 2000 he dedicates his time to Batuque de Cordas.

Claudio Veiga is originally from Santa Maria, Brasil, his musical carreer led him through different groups until he became the co-founder of Batuque de Cordas.
Apart from being a guitar player he is also a reknown teacher and arranger for different choirs and is a member of the group "Cuidado que Mancha" (children/theater/music), very well-known in the Brasilian artistic scene.

Batuque de Cordas was founded in 2000 by Vinicius Correa and Claudio Veiga.
Their show is a Brazilian instrumental concert, their repertoire a mix of own work (Vinicius Correa) and parts of Braziliand musical tradition.
Vinicius and Claudio bring creativity, technique and personality in the arrangements, with the whole diversity of rhytms and styles Brasil is rich of.
The accoustical guitars play the main part, a guest percusionist is always invited by the duo.

Special guast: Mico Louruz born in Porto Alegre, Brasil. Multi- percussionist Mico plays the pandeiro, berimbau, congas sanza, tama. He studied Indian percussion (tablas) with Pierre Narcisse and Sandip Batacharya in Sangit (Indische muziek school-Brussel), later with Mani Shankar (tabla speler from Varanasi). Also Afro-Cuban percussion with Didier Labarre and Afro-Brazilian percussion with Mestre Moa do Catendê.

As our trip to Brasil has as goal to live the Brasilian everyday life from the inside, the activities will be inserted in the activities that already exist at the places where we will be staying.

During this intensive Capoeira Angola workshop the techniques of Jogo de Dentro, Jogo de fora and Jogo amarrado will be studied.
We'll also closely study the musical part: the Berimbau en its rythms, pandeiro, atabaque and singing: Ladainhas, quadras and corridos.
The workshop is taught by Mestre Mico Louruz and Mestre Djop Barbosa.
Mestre Mico Louruz has 30 years experience in Capoeira and 25 as teacher. He is the founder of the group CAPOEIRA ANGOLA TUPINAMBAS (classes in Antwerpen and Mechelen). His mestres were: M. Churrasco, M. Norival, M. Miguel Machado, M. Moa do Katende.
Mestre Djop is a member of GRUPO CATIVEIRO and also has 30 years experience in capoeira and ample experience in teaching (classes in Brussel, Gent and Schoten).

Classes are given by Mestre Miguel Machado who began learning capoeira 1964 with Mestre Antônio Rodrigues. His other mestres were Mestre Augusto de São Pedro (a student of Mestre Bimba), Mestre Gato Preto, Mestre Waldemar da Liberdade, Mestre João Pequeno and Mestre Canjiquinha. In 1987 Mestre Miguel Machado was a co-founder of the Grupo Cativeiro Capoeira from which he is president. In 2008 Mestre Miguel became the world champion in the masters category during the first capoeira world championship.
Class schedule: All profit from these classes goes to the project "Ilê dos Êrês": a project for underprivileged and street kids in São Miguel, Ilhéus - Bahia, Brasil.

    Tambú - Batuque de Umbigada, "batuque, tambú or Caiumba originates from the cities of Tiête, Capivari and Piracicaba. This region from the state of São Paulo, saw a big affluence of Africans and African descendents brought into the country to work the sugar cane and coffee plantations, especially after the decline of the plantation in the Paraíba Valley." The dance takes place in rows and has in its main feature "umbigadas" (making navel contact). It is governed by songs, which are called "moda ou ponto". From its Bantu origin, it keeps the instruments of African origin and the intent of the ceremonies of marriage and fertility of the Congo region Angola. Musical instruments: Tambú (bass drum), quinjengue (treble drum) matraca (two sticks of wood that hit the body of the tambú) and guaiás (rattle).
  • Saturday : 3.00 pm - 10.00 pm : Practice, music, percussion and rodas / classes for beginners and advanced.
  • Sunday : 1.00 pm - 6.00 pm : Practice, music, percussion, rodas and graduation / classes for beginners and advanced.
    6.00 pm: Feijoada (price included in the week-end price!)
Attention, those who pay for a day's workshop must reserve Feijoada, as well as those not participating to the stage who want dinner.
